The Centre of Higher Education Alberta Giménez (CESAG), ascribed to the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), is specialized in the training of teachers and media communication professionals. The official qualifications of graduate degrees in Early Childhood Education, Primary Education, Journalism and Audiovisual Communication are given following a model where each student receives personalized attention from specialized teaching staff. This non-profit institution is interested in improving the technical, cultural and humanistic training of students, in a highly complex context, who will assume professional responsibilities of great social significance.
CESAG provides high quality training based on the direct contact that is offered to each student with a dynamic teaching staff, completely adapted to the demands of the European space of higher education and a great connoisseur of the working opportunities available to the students. The atmosphere favours the coexistence and integration between all the members of the university community; the students should respond with dedication to the positive development of their studies, since the centre values perseverance as the central point of their progress. The academic and personal development is possible by means of learning in small groups, which also allows for the use of the installations and the technological equipment.
In this way, CESAG hopes to guarantee the teaching of state of the art knowledge, capable of satisfying the environments’ expectations and turning itself into a factor for positive change. To achieve this, CESAG has always maximised the efficiency in the management of its resources fulfilling the demands of its mission, with over a hundred years of teaching experience, an innovative spirit inherited from the history of the institution that has always known how to adjust with success to the socioeconomic transformations of the current moment.
The origins of the centre go back to 1872, when Alberta Giménez was entrusted with the direction of the first Normal School of Female Teachers of the Balearics. The profoundly educated Alberta Giménez was enterprising and open-minded and created her own educational style, influenced by the great educators of her time – Pestalozzi, Fröbel and Progressive Education- and was also inspired by Poveda, Siurot, Bosco and Manjon. Even today her thinking, which is based on the acknowledgement of the individuality of the student and the rigorous organization of the teaching, is still greatly valid. At the end of the 19th century, Alberta Giménez stood out for her confidence in women, her scientific and creative capacity as an educator, generator of values and for her tenacity when overcoming the difficulties of each circumstance during the four decades she was in charge of the formation of teachers of the islands.
In 1948 the Alberta Giménez School was founded in Palma and from October 1979 is located in la Vileta. Two years later, it was recognised as an official centre of higher education and ascribed to the University of Barcelona, which later changed due to the creation of the UIB in 1978.
CESAG is today the oldest centre with highest number of students ascribed to the state university. Since its beginnings, as a university school, it has qualified an infinite number of teachers. It is also a pioneer in the archipelago due to the implementation in 2005 of the degrees of Journalism and Audiovisual Communication, designed to be in line with the flow of 21st century Media. But above all, the pre-university education of over thirty thousand students in schools in Europe, America and Africa forms part of the legacy of Alberta Giménez.Â
