Competences for graduate studies in Journalism

 Generic competences

  1. To comprehend and express oneself correctly, orally and in writing and to be capable of adapting the message to different audiences using the official languages and at least one foreign language.
  2. To dominate the media of iconographic, computing and graphic expression.
  3. To use Information and Communication Technology in his/her professional development.
  4. To observe, analyse and process relevant information to issue judgments based on scientific criteria.
  5. To identify problems, possible solutions and make efficient decisions.
  6. To design and manage innovative and creative projects from an ethical point of view.
  7. To put into practice acquired knowledge.
  8. To work in a team.
  9. To know how to find the interpretative key factors of any natural, social, economic, historic and political phenomenon.
  10. To be familiar with and respect diversity and multiculturalism.
  11. To act coherently according to the humanistic Christian principles.
  12. Learning to learn.

Specific Competences

  • To express oneself fluently and efficiently in the official languages of the Balearic Islands, orally and in writing and to take advantage of the most appropriate linguistic and literary resources for each communication medium.
  • To express oneself, orally and in writing, in a foreign language.
  • To be familiar with and use the technological systems and resources and their interactive applications with communicative efficiency.
  • To be familiar with the state of the world and its recent historical evolution to understand its different parameters: political, economic, cultural and religious.
  • To be familiar with the structure of mass media and its main formats and analyse its relationship with different contemporary styles of life.
  • To be familiar with journalism ethics and deontology as well as its legal legislations related to the management of information in the professional practice as well as the limitations of freedom of speech.
  • To critically use the different languages, genres and news formats, as well as the technological supports, analogical and digital.
  • To be familiar with the structure, operation and ways of managing communication businesses.
  • To know the main theoretical trends which formalise and criticise, from a conceptual and methodological point of view, the informative and communicative processes.
  • To know the main theories and debates about advertising, public relations and corporative communication.
  • To be familiar with the historic evolution of the different journalistic traditions (local, European and international) and the different theories and trends which analyse these traditions.
  •  To reflect critically on the influence of mass media on education and on the relationship of the media with schools and to be familiar with the educational potentials of the Information and Communication Technologies.
  • To be familiar with the social, cultural and political reality of the mass media in the autonomous community and its interrelation with the Spanish, European and world context.
